The European Commission’s recent announcement that implementation date for the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) returned to 30 December 2025 highlights the importance of timely preparation for forest product exporters, says Responsible Wood, the national governing body in Australia and New Zealand for certification scheme PEFC International.
In September, the Commission proposed a 12-month delay to 2026 to allow more time for preparation. That decision has now been reversed, with a six-month grace period for checks and enforcement introduced to support a smoother phase-in.
The latest revision introduces a simplified process for micro and small primary operators in low-risk countries. As of the implementation date, these smaller operators will only be required to submit a one-off declaration in the EU’s IT system, replacing the need for regular updates and submissions.
“The reinstatement of the 2025 implementation date highlights the importance of proactive preparation for all exporters,” said Responsible Wood CEO, Simon Dorries.
“While the grace period and simplified requirements for smaller operators are welcome, it’s crucial that businesses review their supply chains and compliance systems now to meet EU expectations.”
Other adjustments include streamlined due diligence for downstream operators and traders within the EU. Going forward, only a single statement at the point of entry to the EU will be required.
With further clarification expected from the Commission, Responsible Wood will continue to stay connected with the process and provide guidance and updates to keep certification holders, members and the broader industry informed as new details and requirements emerge.
