The 2022 PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue is just around the corner! Ahead of the event, we spoke to the speakers and involved companies to learn about their thoughts on sustainability and the role of forest certification for a greener future.
One of the speakers is Tomás Sercovich, CEO of Business in the Community Ireland.
Tomás has led Business in the Community Ireland for four years, but has been associated with the organization for close to 15 years.
Growing up in Argentina, he experienced some of the negative impacts that business can have for society, which sparked his interest in and passion for sustainable development and corporate responsibility. His career in the sustainability sector has allowed him to look at the role of business in driving for positive change.
In our interview, he shared insights into sustainability concerns in society, the important role of businesses, and his vision for a sustainable future.
“Sustainability has moved on significantly over the last years,” he highlighted. “Consumers are telling us that they want to live sustainably, and that they want advise on how to do that.”
“When we talk about net zero – eliminating all emissions – that obviously has an impact on forests, from the perspective of construction materials, packaging, and all the various uses that forests and forest products have. Sustainable forest management, let alone certified forest management, has to be part of it. That is absolutely critical.”
“We need to come together in this agenda for sustainability. We need to ensure that this is not something that in a few years’ time will be left behind or forgotten,” he continued.
“It is very important to keep that strong balance between environmental, social and societal issues.”
At the PEFC Stakeholder Dialogue on 12 May in Dublin, Tomás will discuss how to drive the sustainability agenda forward in Ireland. Join us to hear more from him and a range of other speakers!
