As featured by PEFC International
Responsible Wood has scanned the world for positive stories from the forest. This June, ‘Sunset over the forest’, taken by Martin Šebesta is the PEFC photo in the spotlight. Martin tells us more about his photo and why forests and forest certification are so important.
How do you feel about forests, both professionally and personally?
Currently I am in a PhD degree programme. My branch of study is Ecology and Biodiversity Conservation, and I do research on wood-decay fungi. Therefore, I think protecting our forests is very important and our generation should pay more attention to this environmental problem.
How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?
I took my photo in the Poľana mountains in central Slovakia. The forest is a popular setting for photographs because it is a place of tranquillity and stillness. If you live in a large city or place with few trees, the forest is an ideal place for taking photos. I was lucky to catch the last rays of sunlight over the treetops.
What do you think about the work that an organisation such as PEFC does to care for forests?
Sustainable forest management is very important for finding the balance between protecting our forests for future generations and benefitting from what the forests provide, including the timber and timber products we use every day.
