This month, we hear from Yusuf Madi, a runner up in our 2021 ‘Experience Forests, Experience PEFC’ photo contest. Yusuf tells us more about his photo ‘A Bird’s Eye View of Wetland Forests of Tasik Bera’, showing the stunning Bera Lake in Pahang, Malaysia, from above.
How do you feel about forests, both professionally and personally?
Personally, I think forests are important, not only to me, but to everyone. Imagine, one day we wake up, and what we see is a barren land. A land with no breath, no nature. A devastating, hellish scene.
Professionally, forests are the last guard, an old guard that is standing between humanity and destruction. It’s saddening to see so many forests worldwide being destroyed for some ‘greater good’ when there isn’t anything like that.
How did the forest inspire you to take your winning photo?
At first, I was only geo mapping the area for work. However, looking at the surreal forest surrounding us from the boat and seeing the forest from above on my drone controller, I was stunned by the beauty of the sight. That’s when I decided to snap this photo. I was also in the photo, so why not?
What do you think about the work that an organization such as PEFC does to care for forests?
Of course, the work done by PEFC and other non-governmental organizations are reflected by the undying efforts to preserve nature and ultimately the forest. I understand that the work done is never finished, and it needs all the support from all governments and each individual for it to succeed.
