Showcasing the innovation, sustainability credentials and extraordinary landscapes for which Australia is so well recognised, Responsible Wood, in conjunction with HQPlantations, hosted a pre-conference Mass Timber and Forestry tour as part of the recent World Conference of Timber Engineering (WCTE).
The tour launched with a behind-the-scenes tour of the University of Sunshine Coast’s Moreton Bay Campus Mass Timber Extension, a $100m mass timber extension that opened in 2024. Attendees were treated to a firsthand account from one of the project’s architects, KIRK, and structural engineering firm, Aurecon, who shared their experiences and insights into the innovative design and construction process behind this landmark development.
The project represented a collaboration of expertise, with additional professional services and products provided by Bligh Tanner, Cottee Parker, and HESS Timber. From there, guests explored HQPlantations’ Southern Pine Plantation, taking the opportunity to discover how responsible forestry is helping position timber as the ultimate renewable building material.
As one of Australia’s largest plantation growers and a Responsible Wood member, HQPlantations offered the chance to examine their certified sustainable forest management practices, including learning about the timber certification process and current research projects taking place.
Taking the opportunity to stop in for the incredible views of the Glasshouse Mountains for lunch, the tour was a popular option for conference delegates seeking to understand local practices in delivering sustainable timber in Queensland.
