PlantingSeeds Projects with Support from Responsible Wood
Fostering biodiversity and sustainability in urban and regional areas is more important than ever in the face of urbanisation and environmental challenges. PlantingSeeds, one of the recipients of a Responsible Wood Community Grant for 2023-24, is leading the charge in protecting our natural environments. Their work focuses on engaging communities to plant native vegetation and create habitats that support endangered pollinators, promoting long-term sustainability and biodiversity in Australia’s urban landscapes.
Teaming up with a range of incredible collaborators, including Greater Sydney Landcare, the New South Wales State Emergency Service (NSW SES), Responsible Wood, and local groups from the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA), PlantingSeeds is making significant strides in environmental conservation. Their efforts focus on regenerating urban environments and safeguarding Australia’s threatened pollinators, which are crucial in maintaining biodiversity and ensuring ecosystem health.
Some recent PlantingSeeds projects have been particularly inspiring. It has highlighted the power of collaboration and showcased how community groups can collaborate to amplify their impact. One notable partnership was with Greater Sydney Landcare, two NSW SES units, and the Hunter’s Hill Men’s Shed, where participants used timber donated through a Responsible Wood Community Grant and Forestry Corporation of NSW to create essential habitats in the urban environment.
Building Habitats for Urban Biodiversity
One standout project involved the creation of possum boxes, an initiative that brought together volunteers from the NSW SES Marrickville and Waverley Units alongside the Hunter’s Hill Men’s Shed. These boxes serve as vital urban habitats for possums and other native species, helping to restore ecological balance in built-up areas where natural shelter is scarce.
The possum box-making activity was more than just a community-building exercise. It was an opportunity for volunteers to learn about the importance of biodiversity in urban settings. Volunteers discovered how small actions, like creating spaces for native plants and animals, can significantly impact preserving local ecosystems. The timber used for the boxes was sourced from Responsible Wood and Forestry Corporation of NSW, demonstrating how sustainably sourced wood can support biodiversity initiatives, both at the forest management level and at the level of certified forest products.
By partnering with local communities and organisations, PlantingSeeds raises awareness about the vital role of pollinators and biodiversity in urban settings. Their approach ensures that volunteers and participants engage in meaningful conservation work and leave with a deeper understanding of how human activities can positively or negatively affect the natural world.

The Power of Partnerships
The collaboration between PlantingSeeds and other groups, such as the NSW SES and the AMSA, highlights the strength of cross-sector partnerships in addressing environmental challenges. The involvement of volunteers from the NSW SES, known for their role in emergency response, demonstrates their commitment to community service beyond crises. Their work with PlantingSeeds shows how diverse organisations can unite around a common goal to protect the environment.
The Hunter’s Hill Men’s Shed played a key role by preparing the timber pieces used to build the possum boxes. The Men’s Shed movement, which encourages social connections and skill-building among men, has long been involved in community-focused projects, and their contribution to this project underscores their organisation’s versatility and community spirit.
Supporting Endangered Pollinators
A key focus of PlantingSeeds’ work is the protection of endangered pollinators. These essential creatures, including bees and other insects, are vital for the health of ecosystems as they ensure the reproduction of plants by facilitating pollination. However, habitat loss, climate change, and pesticide use have significantly reduced pollinator populations worldwide. By planting native vegetation and creating safe habitats, PlantingSeeds is playing an important role in reversing this trend and supporting the long-term health of pollinators.
The collaboration with Responsible Wood through the Community Grants program reflects a broader commitment to sustainable forestry that balances cultural engagement and environmental conservation with economic support for communities, ensuring that timber is sourced responsibly while contributing to the health and vitality of natural ecosystems.

Looking Ahead
As PlantingSeeds continues to grow and expand its initiatives, these projects remind us of the impact that community-driven projects can have. Engaging with diverse groups and fostering a collaborative approach to sustainability protects our natural ecosystems and inspires future generations to take an active role in conservation efforts; these efforts are well-aligned with the sustainability objectives of our standard AS/NZS 4708.
Responsible Wood is proud to support PlantingSeeds through the Community Grants program and looks forward to seeing the continued positive outcomes of their projects. Together, organisations like those mentioned are all playing a role in helping to build a more sustainable future projecting biodiversity and remaining mindful of the balance of the natural world.
